Switchgrass was formed by four Portland, OR area musicians who share of love of acoustic instruments and the rootsy, soulful music that they bring to life.

John Stocks, Guitar/Dobro/Vocals/Harmonica: A native of Minneapolis and former music shop owner, John played in a myriad of midwest bands before migrating west.  A prolific songwriter with a soulful, story-telling voice, John is an incredibly versatile and talented musician.

Mike Smith, Guitar.  Mike grew up in and around San Francisco where he worshipped at the altar of Jerry and was heavily influenced by the inventive bluegrass styles of locals David Grisman and Peter Rowan.  Mike has played in numerous Portland area bands including long time fixture on the local live music scene, Mystic Canyon.

Steve Rogers, Mandolin/Vocals.  Steve is the truest grasser in the band and can always be counted on to know the  tried and true bluegrass tunes whenever the boys just feel like pickin' and grinnin'.  He possesses a wise, sweet classic alt country/folk voice and has played around Portland for years, including stints in Coyote Moon and acoustic jam band Mystic Canyon.

Duane Ransom, Upright Bass/Vocals.  Duane is a real pro, having played in California bands that opened for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor and Poco.  Since moving back to Oregon many years ago, he has played with popular local bands Soul Vaccination and Cowboy Heroes.
